These are sketches I did a couple of days ago of Katy Jurado and an attempt at Penelope Cruz. I did them on scraps of cardboard with brush pen, gray marker (for shadows), acrylic & colored pencil (for highlights). They're both about 4x7"... postcard size, in case I ever get the urge to mail them.I don't think I got Penelope just right. But I like the way Katy turned out. I found the more I tried to make her look like my wife, the better the drawing got. Katy, by the way, was the first Latina nominated for an Oscar (Best Supporting Actress, "Broken Lance" 1954), but she did not win. The second Mexican Actress nominated for an Oscar was Selma Hayek in 2003. Between the two, Rita Moreno won an Oscar in 1962, but in that she is Puerto Rican (and therefore a U.S. citizen by birth), the statistic records often jump over her.
¡Caramba!
