March is Sketchbook Month...Day 30

Watched "Hugo" last night. Enjoyed it, but was too busy sketching to really get immersed in it.

March is Sketchbook Month...Day 27, 28 & 29

Playing catch-up with my posts once again...

Sketch on a Manilla envelope:
Another sketch on a Manilla envelope. They are great drawing surfaces.
Senator Walrus daydreams of performing at SeaWorld:
Yet another decorated envelope to mail a contract to a client. Yes, those are custom stamps, too. I had them made for my postcards back when the postage rate was 5¢ less than it is now. So, for this letter, Im overpaying 9¢, not including the surcharge of personalized postage. This contract better be worth it.

March is Sketchbook Month...Day 25 & 26

My mind is quit busy with work, so when I sit down to draw for me, it wanders in places I never knew existed.

Both drawings were done with a Blackwing pencil in a Moleskine sketchbook.

March is Sketchbook Month...Day 22, 23 & 24

Playing catch up here again. I am really drawing every day. I just don't always get to my computer to post the results. Here are the previous three days. Meanwhile, I have 3 more hours to get a sketch done for today.

March is Sketchbook Month...Day 21

I actually had another drawing ready to upload, then I happened upon an interview with Alfred Hitchcock on YouTube, where Hitch was asked what happiness was. As I listened to him, I decided to do a quick sketch. Click here for his answer.

March is Sketchbook Month...Day 20

Presented without comment.

Whoa! Catch Up!!

I've been sketching daily, but I've been very remiss in posting...

Here is Tom Baker (The Doctor from my youth).
(Drawn on 3/14/12)

Matt Smith as The Doctor, with his companion, Amy Pond:
(Drawn on 3/15/12)

Another Amy Pond sketch in my Moleskine. Still getting her down. And these pages don't take watercolor very well. However, I just saw a watercolor paper Moleskin book online. Just might have to order one!
(Drawn on 3/16/12)

And on March 17, of course, I drew St. Patrick (born in Britain as Maewyn Succat).
I've been drawing actors the last couple of days. I have a great book called In Character: Actors Acting, full of incredible photos of the most amazing emotive faces you can find. It's better than any book of photo reference of facial emotions I have seen. Yesterday, I scrawled out this image of Alan Cumming.
The frog, I just added to make it more interesting. Yes, it's a postcard I'm sending to an illustrator friend. With any luck, she'll draw something for me, too.

March is Sketchbook Month...Day 12& 13

I did these drawings of Matt Smith as Doctor Who last night just before and after midnight so they count as my March 12th & 13th Sketchbook Month entries.
Mr. Smith has such an interesting face that even if I did a straight portrait of him, it would likely feel like a caricature.

March is Sketchbook Month...Day 10 & 11

Sorry for the late update, but I was upgrading my operating system over the weekend, and my scanner was offline until I could get a new driver.
Anyway, here are photos of my weekend sketches. The one on the left is a scribble Jennifer Lawrence from "Winter's Bone". She's playing Katniss in the soon-to-be-released "The Hunger Games". And honestly, this drawing doesn't look anything like her.
And on the right is Jonathan Pryce in "Pirates of the Caribbean".

It was an odd mix of TV over the weekend.

March is Sketchbook Month...Day 9

Stayed up late last night watching Doctor Who reruns. Penciled this in bed, and inked it this afternoon. From an episode called "Planet of the Ood".
I love how the evil business Tycoons (played here by Tim McInnerny) still wear suits in the 44th century.

Pentel brush pen & marker.

March is Sketchbook Month...Day 8

I wasn't even going to draw on this Netfilx envelope. I told myself to just take it to the mailbox...just take it to the mailbox! Then I saw a Sharpie.

It's not even a dinosaur movie. It's an old Cary Grant-Irene Dunne romantic comedy.

March is Sketchbook Month...Day 7

Sketching on my iPad this evening. Rough, but fun.

March is Sketchbook Month...Day 6

Yes, this is a late entry. I drew this yesterday, but I wasn't at my computer. I photographed it with my phone, but I can't upload photos to Blogger with it. I can upload to Facebook and Instagram (or Twitter, if I had an account), but not my blog. I guess blogs are too old fashioned now.

Anyway, this is Freema Agyeman who played Martha Jones on Doctor Who. I drew her from memory with my Pentel Brush pen in my Moleskine.

March is Sketchbook Month...Day 5

Saw this guy in the grocery last night. Came home and did a gesture study.

Pentel brush pen & watercolor.

March is Sketchbook Month...Day 4

I was watching Doctor Who and drew a side character, a headmaster at a school. But I think he ended up looking more like Bryan Cranston of "Breaking Bad".

Pental brush pen & watercolor.

Here's the line work. I think I like it better this way:

March is Sketchbook Month...Day 3

Here's a little before & after. I did a pencil sketch in my sketchbook, then later splashed some watercolor on it. The paper tends to crinkle when it gets wet, so I have to be rather sparing with it.

March is Sketchbook Month...Day 2

I recently saw a story about a French journalist, Edith Bouvier, who had wounded in Syria, but was recently arrived in Lebanon. I was struck by the somberness in her eyes. All the other photos of her were smiling, naturally, because of her rescue/release. My sketch was taken from a photo taken in December as she was entering Syria.

March is Sketchbook Month!!

Some of you may remember that last year, I joined a group of artists and illustrators who decided to post a drawing from their sketchbook every day for the month of March. It's a great discipline to force yourself to draw every day. So prepare for daily (or at least almost daily) posts for the next 30 days!I actually drew this one of Benedict Cumberbatch yesterday, but wanted to post it anyway.

David Tennant as The Doctor.
